THE LEGEND OF TOBA LAKE
Orientation
Once upon a time, lived a fisherman in the northern part of the Sumatran Island. His name was Batara Guru Sahala. One day when he went to fishing, he catches a big gold fish. The man took the fish into his hut and walked outside his hut thinking about the way how to cook the very big fish. He was surprised to find that fish because the fish could talk and it begged to set it free. He did accordingly. Then he left the fish for a little while.
After a little while, he got back into his hut. He startled to death because the fish had disappeared and he found another creature, a beautiful woman. Sahala asked the woman where she was come from. She answered that she was a fish that Sahala was caught before.The fish had turned into a beautiful lady and its scales changed to be beautiful jeweled ornaments fitted in her body dressed so elegantly.
Sahala felt in love with the woman and proposed her to be his wife. The woman accepted his proposal with one condition that Sahala had to promise not to tell a soul about the secret that she was once a fish, otherwise there would be a huge disaster. Sahala then agreed to that condition and swore he will never tell it. Then they got married and then they had a child called Samo.
Complication
One day the mother told her child to deliver meals to his father field, the child then went to deliver rice to his father. But in the middle of the trip, this child was felt hungry, then he ate the food. On arrival the child gave the food package to the father, the father immediately opened the food package. But he was very startled when he opened the package there is only bones remained. Knowing that his child had finished his lunch, the father went mad. He shouted angrily ‘you’re really the offspring of fish.’
Resolution
Then Samo ran home and asked her mother about the truth. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his promise. She told Samo to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to come. When Samo left, she went to the the hill, then she knelt down and prayed to her God. Soon, there was an earthquake, storms, and springs came out from the ground. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. Sahala wife’s also ran from the house, and each footprint she left became a natural spring. The whole area got flooded and became Lake Toba. Sahala wife’s turned into a fish again and Sahala became the island of Samosir (the big island in the middle of Lake Toba).
Now the lake was known as Toba Lake. Toba came from Tuba word means no mercy. And the hill in the middle called Samosir Island. Samosir means ‘Samo di usir’ or in English : Samo have been evicted.
